The city of Los Angeles—Emily Stone’s second-best actress Oscar came from “Poor Things,” and the news startled the world.
In a race that most analysts deemed too close to call, she defeated Lily Gladstone of “Killers of the Flower Moon” on Sunday night. Had she been nominated, Gladstone would have made history as the first Native American to take home an Oscar.
The announcement of last year’s winner, Michelle Yeoh, left Stone looking stunned. Before making her way down the aisle to embrace her co-star Mark Ruffalo and director Yorgos Lanthimos, she embraced and kissed her husband, Dave McCary.
“I believe I passed out,” she announced from behind the scenes. It was shocking to me, indeed. I can’t get the feeling that I’m still slightly off-center. Along with the five former best actress winners who presented the nominees, Stone embraced each of them.
In the role of Bella Baxter, a young lady in Victorian London who undergoes a brain transplant and embarks on a quest for self-discovery, Stone delivered a performance that garnered accolades. Black humor abounds in this film, which features steampunk aesthetic elements.
“This is not my problem. It’s about a group of people working together to create something bigger than themselves, and that’s the best part about filmmaking, Stone stated while performing.” It is an immense privilege for me to experience this with each member of the cast and crew. Bella Baxter is a once-in-a-lifetime gift, and I’m grateful to you, Yorgos.
Upon entering the stage, Stone informed the audience that her dress was damaged, pointing to its rear. Everything was in working order when she returned to the platform to address the journalists.
She expressed her joy at being sewn back into her body. She made the comment, “I really do think I blew it during ‘I’m Just Ken,'” in reference to Ryan Gosling’s performance of the original song nomination. “Ryan astounded me, and that number was mind-blowing.”
With her two Oscars, Stone becomes just the thirteenth woman to do so. In 2017, she made her debut in the love musical “La La Land.” In both 2015 and 2019, she received supporting actress nominations.
This year, “Oppenheimer” ultimately defeated her production of “Poor Things” in the best picture category. After Frances McDormand, who won both awards for “Nomadland” in 2021, she became the second female actor to receive best picture and acting nominations for the same picture.
Glastonstone and Stone exchanged victories en route to their Oscar showdown. While Stone took home hardware from both the Golden Globes and the BAFTA Film Awards, Gladstone was victorious in the Screen Actors Guild Awards and another Globe category.
The teen comedy “Easy A.” (2010) was Stone’s breakout role. “The Help,” “The Battle of the Sexes,” “Birdman,” numerous “Spider-Man” films, “The Help,” and “The Favourite” were among the many big parts that the 35-year-old actor from Scottsdale, Arizona, went on to play.
Annette Bening, Sandra Hüller, and Carey Mulligan were the other leading actresses nominated for their respective films, “Nyad,” “Anatomy of a Fall,” and “Maestro.”
