The Results of the 2024 Michigan Presidential Primary
The Results of the 2024 Michigan Presidential PrimaryToday, the Democratic and Republican primaries for president are taking place in Michigan. At 9 o’clock in the evening ET, the polls will shut. With 117 delegates up for grabs, Michigan is the final Democratic primary before Super Tuesday. In this race, leftist organizers are trying to discredit President Biden’s support for Israel by encouraging voters to select the “uncommitted” ballot option. This is President Biden’s main opponent.
Sixteen of the fifty-five delegates up for grabs in this state will be decided in today’s race. At a state party convention on Saturday, the remaining 39 will be determined. Along with five other Republicans who have since dropped out of the contest, former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley and former President Donald Trump will be appearing on the ballot.
The number of delegates at stake for the Democrats is 117. Minnesota Representative Dean Phillips is competing against President Joe Biden. Some Democrats are urging their supporters to choose “uncommitted” on the ballot as a form of protest against Biden’s handling of the Israel-Hamas conflict.
LIVE RESULTS
- Former President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden won the Michigan primaries, NBC News projects.
- Biden faced opposition from critics of his handling of the Israel-Hamas war, who urged Democrats to cast protest votes for “uncommitted.”
- After having completed a sweep of the early voting states, Trump is looking to continue his march to the GOP nomination over former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley.
- On the Democratic side, 117 delegates were up for grabs in the Michigan primary. For Republicans, today’s contest will determine how 16 out of 55 delegates will be awarded. The 39 others will be decided Saturday at a state party convention.
Michigan Predictions
In the Michigan primary, former president Donald Trump will seek to solidify his position as the Republican nominee for president. With a win here, he would extend his winning streak in nomination battles to 6-0. The outcome of the primary will only determine the allocation of 16 of the 55 Republican delegates from Michigan; the remaining delegates will be decided at a party convention on Saturday, March 2.
- A coordinated campaign to cast a “noncommittal” vote in the Michigan primary in opposition to former president Joe Biden’s position on the Israel-Hamas conflict is under attack. At this point in the Democratic primary, Biden has won every race and delegate. With the 2024 primaries just around the corner, Democrats have moved Michigan up on the presidential nomination calendar.
- An Associated Press dual-race call indicates that both President Biden and former President Trump have triumphed in their respective Michigan primary battles.
In all of their presidential campaigns thus far, both candidates have been unbeatable.
U.S. Representative Dean Phillips of Minnesota is Biden’s last remaining opponent, but he has made no effort to impede Biden’s candidature bid. While Israel is still launching brutal attacks in Gaza, the president faced his greatest test in the Michigan primary from within his own party, which was opposed to his backing for the Israeli cause.
Protesters in Michigan’s rapidly expanding Arab-American community called for Democratic primary voters to mark their ballots as “uncommitted” in order to end the state’s ongoing hostilities. Plus, organisers were hoping for a significantly lower turnout than the more than 30,000 “uncommitted” ballots cast in the primary.
The Associated Press reports that as of Tuesday night, 58 delegates have been allotted to Biden.
With these victories, Trump has secured the Republican nomination for president six times. Former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley, his last remaining serious opponent, is winless in all of her contests. According to the Associated Press, as of Tuesday night, Trump had nine delegates and was leading Haley by over 30 points.
Following the race’s announcement, he congratulated his Michigan GOP supporters by calling in to a watch party. “I’m so proud of the results” in Michigan, Trump remarked. “The numbers are far greater than we even anticipated,” he commented. Despite facing opposition in his nomination campaign, Trump informed the audience that he is already focused on the general election in November.
“We will be doing a lot of campaigning over the next couple of months,” according to him. “Nov. 5 cannot come fast enough.” Until at least March 5—Super Tuesday—Haley intends to remain a candidate. Both candidates are still dominating the nomination races, although Haley has stated that she will remain in office due to the widespread dissatisfaction with Biden and Trump.
The primary elections in Michigan will be held in February for the first time this year. Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan signed a bill last year shifting the date of the state’s presidential primary from the second Tuesday in March to February 27th, at Biden’s request.
Tonight will not determine who receives GOP delegates. But Republicans in the state found their lives made more difficult by the change in time.
Early primaries could only be held in four states—Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, and South Carolina—per the regulations set forth by the Republican National Committee. So, Michigan Republicans will wait to distribute most of their delegates until March 2, when the party intends to host a caucus-style convention, in an attempt to comply with the RNC’s regulations.
Thus, just 16 of the 55 Michigan GOP delegates are up for grabs today. State party conventions will determine the distribution of the remaining 39 delegates.
Moreover, the Republican Party is going through a period of increasing disarray and internal strife at the time of that convention. Multiple groups within the party have been trying to depose Kristina Karamo, the current head of the Michigan party, and install Pete Hoesktra, a former congressman and Trump appointee to the United States diplomatic mission in the Netherlands, in her stead.
Refusing to retire, Karamo has stated that she would only do so in response to a court order, meaning she is still the party head. As the party gets ready to host a historic caucus in Michigan during the state convention, this has caused a great deal of uncertainty.
The pressure to remain “uncommitted” to Biden
In a show of protest against Biden’s support for Israel, cease-fire activists in Michigan urged Democratic primary voters to cast ballots for the “uncommitted” option, even though Biden won the primary today.
